The late George Ghiz (1930-2009) started his interest in photography in 1956. After his retirement from Canada Post where he was employed 37 years, he pursued his passion in sports, nature and animal photography. He spent many weekends and week-long trips with his photography buddies in this endeavor, and was also seen on many sport fields, photographing local varsity soccer, football and basketball games.
He was a life long member of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia(PGNS) where he was active in judging and participating in many competitions. George won first and second prize in photo contests sponsored by Photo Life, Popular Photography and Nikon International. He was also the recipient of the Mayor of Halifax Trophy for his picture: Town Clock Full Moon.
George passed away in February 2009. The PGNS and friends established a trophy in George's memory in 2011. The "George Ghiz Sports Action Trophy", to be awarded annually to the maker of the best sports action image selected from the photo journalism category that shows peak of action and impact within that sport.
